Mutiara Taman Negara

Malayan Tapir at Taman Negara, Pahang
Kuala Tahan
Tapirs are endangered species of animals but it can be seen at Taman Negara Pahang ...!!
Size varies between types, but most tapirs are about 2 metres (7 ft) long, stand about a metre (3 ft) high at the shoulder, and weigh between 150 and 300 kg (330 to 700 lb). Coats are short and range in color from reddish-brown to grey to nearly black, with the notable exceptions of the Malayan Tapir, which has a white saddle-shaped marking on its back, and the Mountain Tapir, which has longer, woolly fur. All tapirs have oval, white-tipped ears, rounded, protruding rumps with stubby tails, and splayed, hoofed toes, with four toes on the front feet and three on the hind feet, which help them to walk on muddy and soft ground. Baby tapirs of all types have striped-and-spotted coats for camouflage. Females have a single pair of mammary glands.

Taman Negara, Pahang
successful birdwatching experience in Taman Negara Pahang!
...the absolute highlight at Taman Negara was finding a small fruiting tree (Ficus tree : http://www.flickr.com/photos/mybukit/3653428795/in/photostream/ ) in a clearing in front of the Bumbun Tabing hide (“bunbun” translates as hide). From what I could understand, the hide was used only at night to show the guests Barking, Mouse and Samba Deer and of course wild pigs. When I saw the fruit on the tree, I climbed down the side of the hide (a little tricky with my camera and tripod) onto the forest floor and walked out into the clearing. I then proceeded to inch closer and closer so as not to frighten the extremely nervous feeding birds. I did this for 16 hours over 2 days and eventually got within 10 metres of 3 Rhinoceros Hornbills. I took 200 photos of them and got some wonderfully pleasing results (a few are attached). I photographed 18 species of birds in this tree, only missing a Scaly-breasted Bulbul which came in to the top of the tree a couple of times. The 18 species I photographed were –
- Thick-billed Green-pigeon
- Rusty-breasted cuckoo
- Rhinoceros Hornbill
- Gold-whiskered Barbet
- Red-throated Barbet ( I was unsure of my identification and Peter Lansley and Jeff Davies confirmed it when I got home)
- Blue-eared Barbet
- Green Broadbill (marvellous bird and the only one I saw)
- Black-winged Flycatcher-shrike
- Greater Green Leafbird
- Asian Fairy-bluebird
- Grey-bellied Bulbul
- Streaked Bulbul
- Red-eyed Bulbul
- Spectacled Bulbul
- Stripe-throated Bulbul
- Puff-backed Bulbul
- Cream-vented Bulbul (as yet I cannot work out from my photos which ones are of this species)
- Buff-vented Bulbul
On our last evening at Taman Negara, the Mutiara shouted us a free evening meal for being long-stay guests. This was a generous and unexpected gesture. The average stay is only 1 to 3 nights, which in my view is far too short. Anyone contemplating a trip to Taman Negara should ensure they stay at the Mutiara Resort.

HITAM PUTIH Taman Negara (1963-1967)
Kuala Tahan
" I attach some pictures. There were not as many of the guides and boatmen as I had hoped but you may recognised some of the faces. These are pictures from the years 1963 and 1967. We have other photos somewhere of 1965 and 1968 or 69 and when I next go back to my father's house next month I will try and find them.
The first one is of the chalet in the resort in 1963. There is also a photo of the Lodge near lata Berkoh, that one is 1967. The picture of the hide is from 1963 and is the one near Kuala Trenggan.
If you do recognise the people, please pass on my warm regards. Those holidays in the Taman Negara then were the best of my life."
with Best Wishes
