ATLAS MOTH

Mutiara Taman negara Resort, Kuala Tahan

Today at about 11am, big Atlas Moth was found near construction /room renovation area. I told my friend, Magdelina from KLSO office... butterflies are extremly common here, but this size of Moth you ONLY encounter one in 20 years!

About this Moth :
Size : Almost 20cm
Range : South East Asia only
Habitat : Lowland forest
Diet : Adult Moth do not eat. They live off body fat!

FACT :
Atlas Moth are the largests moth in the world in term of total wing surface area. It is so named because its wing patterns resemble maps. The wing tips are hooked and some say resemble a snake's head complete with eye, to scare off predators. Females do not need to mate to reproduce. If the female lays unfertilized eggs they will produce only male moths.
